Antique English early Victorian Rosewood Combination Chess Table and Reading Lectern.

This is a world class high end quality and hard to find genuine antique English early Victorian period circa 1855 combination Chess Table / Draughts Table and adjustable Reading Lectern. The rectangular rosewood tilt top is has a central parquetry inlaid Ebony and Coromandel Chess board surrounded by well figured and honey coloured Rosewood. The hinged top when raised reveals a fully finished and well detailed shallow storage area and an adjustment system so the top can be adjusted to multiple angles.

The rectangular frieze section tapers with concave surfaces and finishes with a lower undulating French ‘S’ and ‘C’ shaped applied carved scrolls. At one end there are two secret drawers, one for storage and the other for storage however fitted with a compartment for ink bottles and writing paraphanalia.

The central support column is a well turned baluster shape which has been boldly reeded and sits on a small cylindrical base from which flow in tripod formation three shaped and tapered cabriole legs with raised Acanthus carved knees and scrolled toes. Beneath are the original all brass castor assemblies.

Condition: Excellent.
